Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts (GSEM) congratulates Amelia Walsh on earning the Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts Scholarship. She is one of four girls selected for the honor this year.
Amelia, a Sherborn High School graduating senior, impressed the committee with how she leveraged her Girl Scout experiences to continue to make the world a better place. One of her letters of recommendation stated, “She is one of the few students blessed with the mind to make a difference and the heart to stand up for what she believes in.”
Amelia earned her Gold Award – the highest award in Girl Scouting ─ with a school garden project that is leading her towards a future in which she hopes to connect scientists with policy leaders to protect our environment.
“The committee has to make a difficult decision each year, because each girl is so deserving of our continued investment,” said Patricia A. Parcellin, Chief Executive Officer of Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts. “The way Amelia leveraged her Gold Award experience demonstrates her passion for helping others and her deep commitment to creating lasting change.”
Amelia plans to use the $1,500 scholarship, which is funded in part by an anonymous donor, at Georgetown University, where she will pursue a degree in environmental policy at their school of Foreign Service.
Amelia said, “Embedded in all of the Girl Scouts arts and crafts and camping trips were critical lessons in tolerance, kindness, community action, and empowerment… I have been unwittingly taught to be a kind person and a motivated community member and leader.”
A scholarship review committee, composed of GSEM board members, staff and others reviewed applications from nearly two dozen girls. They evaluated the girls’ history, future plans, essay and letters of recommendation. The committee members considered all the ways the applicants are involved in Girl Scouts and other leadership activities in which they participate.
