Sherborn Library to present on fashion history

The Sherborn Library invites the community to step back in time for an engaging and visually rich program, Fashion History: The Gilded Age, taking place on Wednesday, May 27 from 3:00 to 4:15 PM in the Community Room of the Sherborn Library, 4 Sanger St., Sherborn, MA 01770.

This lively presentation explores the elegance and extravagance of the Gilded Age, an era known for its opulent “summer cottages” in Newport and the refined lifestyles of America’s elite. Attendees will journey through the evolution of fashion from the 1870s and 1880s bustle periods to the styles of the 1890s, with a look ahead to the early 20th century. The program will highlight how clothing reflected the social customs, status, and daily lives of those who inhabited this fascinating period.

The lecture will be led by fashion historian Karen (“Ren”) Antonowicz, who holds a Master’s Degree in Textiles, Fashion Merchandising, and Design with a concentration in Historic Costume & Textiles from the University of Rhode Island. Ren brings extensive teaching experience, having taught History of Fashion at the college level for over a decade and contributed to continuing education programs at the Rhode Island School of Design. She is also the founder of Spirits of Fashion, through which she offers lectures and workshops spanning all eras of fashion history.

This program is co-sponsored by the Sherborn Council on Aging and the Friends of the Sherborn Library.
