Three Sherborn Girls Scouts are working together to raise awareness of Sherborn trails and building cairns for people to be able to recognize them while helping to clean nature as part of a project to earn their Silver Awards.
Eighth graders Olivia Goganian, Serena Almy and Persie Baroody started working on their project just before November and expect to complete it in May.
“I enjoy the outdoors very much,” said Baroody. “I know that Olivia and Serena also enjoy this and I think that we decided to choose this project because it was important to us.”
“We all feel so lucky to live in a community that has access to these beautiful trails,” Goganian added. “We felt that they were underutilized. We want Sherborn to go take a hike!”
The three girls considered doing other projects before deciding to pursue their project about the trails in Sherborn. These other projects included picking up trash around the dump and adding a geocaching element to their project.
“We have learned the more people are aware of something, the more they will do it,” Goganian said. “By marking the ‘hard-to-find’ trails, we hope a lot more people will utilize this beautiful resource. We have also learned that three middle school Girl Scouts can make a difference in their community.”
The ultimate goal of this project is to raise awareness of the trails in Sherborn. The girls hope that more people will use them because of how amazing they think they are. They are also very grateful to the Sherborn Conservation Commission who helped them immensely. They’re hopeful that what they’re doing will have an impact on Sherborn for years to come.
