Food Scraps program reducing town waste

A return engagement by the Three Little Pigs resulted in great interest for Dover’s Food Scraps program at the Dover Days Fair. These charming piggies brought attention to the Dover Recycling Committee and Board of Health program to reduce solid waste. The success of this event resulted in 17 more families signing up for the town-sponsored free Food Scraps Program. They join a growing list of more than 230 families who contribute to the reduction of solid waste disposal by as much as 25% - just by allowing their food scraps to be collected weekly for free.

This program feeds the pigs, helps the environment, and extends the life of septic systems. Food recycling reduces the cost of operating the Transfer Station by eliminating food waste from trash removal. And it makes it much easier for residents to dispose of their trash with less volume and weight.

Weekly pick‐up is provided from residences of all food scraps, including egg shells, shellfish, bones – if it was food, it can be recycled. Dover residents are encouraged to participate in the free food scrap program by contacting Karen Hayett at the Dover Board of Health (508-785-0032, x232) or at her email, [email protected].
