Fall is upon us, and it finally feels like it, so what better way to celebrate than with Fall Fun at Powisset Farm! Every Saturday and Sunday in October, the farm invites everyone to come and enjoy a classic New England autumn day.
Fall Fun is exactly what it sounds like, having fun on the farm. The fields are free to look at, behind fencing for safety, but you can see the seasonal vegetables growing from the earth. They sell their fresh produce, as well as a crop share box. It is a great opportunity to learn more about farming and appreciate the work that goes into the food on our plate every day. You don’t have to view it on foot either. The hay ride around the farm shows off all Powisset has to offer from the comfort of a hay bale, and the thrill of a tractor ride for the kid in all of us.
The staff at Powisset open up their food tent to offer a variety of drinks, including seasonal apple cider and alcoholic beverages for the adults. They feature wood fire pizza made with farm fresh vegetables, made in the brick oven in front of your eyes. A delicious and eye catching treat for everyone.
Enjoy your food and drinks with some live music! This past weekend featured local band, The Backwards Hats. They are a folk-rock band but feature songs you will know in their own unique way. They have a connection with the farm too; when the land was left to the trustees, one of the band members worked on the trail upkeep creating the walking paths used by hikers and casual walkers alike.
But there is more to do than eat. The farm features games like cornhole for the competitive spirit, climbable hay bales for the kids (and adults but that may be ill advised), and toy tractors for photos and play.
If you are a calmer sort, or just too large for the climbing bit, there are adorable barnyard animals to fawn over. The Nigerian Dwarf Goats caught eyes first, climbing on the structure in their pen and having adults and children alike admiring them. There are also sheep, who are a bit more shy, and Flemish Giant rabbits, the largest breed of domestic rabbit who can be as big as a dog.
Fall Fun at Powisset has something for everyone to enjoy. The open land is great for kids to run around, or just to hang out with friends over some food. Be sure to check it out if you have a free weekend, or check out the other programs at Powisset for whatever suits your fancy.
