As the summer is winding down, most families are trying to squeeze in one last trip out of town before school starts up again. Luckily for those who are staying local for the last few weeks of vacation, the Dover Town Library is keeping them busy. August 16’s “Crafternoon” was just one event that the library offered to while away a summer day.
Each “Crafternoon” at the Dover Town Library features a different craft than the week before. August 16’s craft was scratch art, where children could draw and make designs with the unique paper. For their creations, the participants simply had to use one of the special pencil-like tools to scratch away the black surface of the paper and reveal rainbow paper underneath. To inspire the children attending the afternoon craft, the library displayed an example of the scratch art paper.
As his brother came to the library to get a button for his summer reading achievements, three-year-old Marshall spent some of his time at the library making his scratch art design. Joining Marshall was three-year-old Logan, whose imagination transformed his artwork into an adventurous and mystical story. “I drawed a purple horse to the moon!” exclaimed Logan as he showed off his scratch art scribbles. When one of the parents at the event noted it looked like a treasure map, he confirmed that it was a map showing how one could go to the farm after a trip to Mars.
They also mentioned how the different colors of the scribbles resemble fireworks. Marshall was more interested in the colors on the paper and how the scratch paper worked. He looked at the colors on his tie-dye shirt, comparing his tee to the colors he revealed on the paper and scratching off more of the black surface of the paper to see more of the colors.
Even though the library was slow on the Wednesday afternoon, it still attracted some curious crafters to the event. While it’s true that summer vacation is coming to an end, the Dover Town Library’s enjoyable activities reminded its visitors that the fun to be had at the library is year-round.
