Rachelle Toth, a traveling crafter from Wilmington, ventured down to the Dover Town Library on a chilly Tuesday evening to teach local crafters how to create handmade string art cards.
Toth bought a variety of patterns, various colors of thread, sponges, and needles to create this hand crafted card. Patrons were able to choose from floral patterns and holiday themed designs such as hearts for Valentine’s Day and shamrocks for St. Patrick’s Day.
After each crafter picked their design and their colors of thread, they placed their design over the piece of paper that would hold their creation. Toth instructed crafters to place the stacked pieces of paper atop the sponge then poke holes through the design paper and into the crafting paper to begin.
Once everyone completed that step, she walked each table through how to weave the string through the holes to fill out the design. From there, each participant then filled out the outline before completing this portion of the craft.
After the designs were set, Toth directed everyone to tape town the thread in the back to secure it in place. Then, patrons glued their design over a thick piece of card paper to complete the craft.
The instructor provided gems, stickers, and markers for everyone to jazz up their cards, if they elected to do so. Many patrons delighted in the craft so much, they asked Toth to forward them holiday themed designs so they were able to create cards such as these for holiday cards moving forward.
Toth typically travels to libraries in and around the Wilmington area- Dover is the furthest library location that she travels to, so the crafters at the DTL were lucky to be in attendance for this program. She also has her own crafting television show on WCTV (Wilmington Community Television) entitled “Crafts ‘N’ Stuff,” where she teaches crafts to children.
