The Medfield Public Library (MPL) is thrilled to report that over 940 kids and teens participated in the Library’s annual summer reading challenge this summer. The library is hugely impressed with the number of enthusiastic young readers in Medfield and thankful to the Friends of the Medfield Library who funded all prizes and programs throughout the summer reading program.

This year’s challenge, Mission Read, was an outer space-themed adventure aimed at encouraging readers to reach for the stars. As in past years, readers who joined the challenge had the opportunity to track the time they spent reading this summer in order to earn prizes.

More readers than ever before finished each of the two challenges, one of which was designed for kids and the other for teens. In addition to the record number of finishers, readers could further challenge themselves to complete additional “stretch” challenges after finishing the initial program. Medfield’s readers were clearly ready to aim for the stratosphere. Participants in Mission Read logged 4,884 hours of reading via the stretch challenge alone! Medfielders are poised to hit the school year running after keeping their minds sharp with all of the impressive reading that they did this summer.

The Library also hosted various events as part of our Summer Reading program. The kickoff event included baby goats from Farmer’s Helpers of Bedford and a concert performance by Elijah T. Grasshopper. Summer Reading concluded on August 16th with a Dragon Foam Foam Party and 32 extra lucky readers won amazing grand prize baskets!

The events, prizes, and materials associated with Medfield’s summer reading program are funded by the Friends of the Medfield Public Library.
