Sherborn had a picture-perfect day for its 350th anniversary parade, which was hosted by the Sherborn Fire and Rescue Association. The sky was deep blue, with bright yellow and red foliage contrasting brilliantly. Townspeople and friends lined the parade route from Sawin Street to Pine Hill Lane on portable chairs, feeling comfortable and excited on a warm day with a pleasant breeze.
The 45-minute parade began at 11 am. It was led by a group of current and vintage police, fire, and rescue vehicles from Sherborn and other nearby towns. They blasted their horns and sounded their sirens to announce that the parade had begun. Following those vehicles was a procession of all manner of antique vehicles, including one long light blue 1970s sedan chauffeuring the parade’s Grand Marshal, Phyllis Braun, and another bearing retired Fire Chief, Francis Heffron.
The first wave of parade vehicles was followed by floats and marching groups from many town organizations and businesses, including the Scouts and Girl Scouts, the 1858 Town House, the Sherborn DPW and their vehicles, the Sherborn Garden Club, The Boggastow Garden Club, Unity Farm, Pine Hill School, Hopestill Farm, and the Sherborn History Center and Museum. The National Lancers 1836 ceremonial Massachusetts horseback squadron looked impressive riding down the parade route and trotting around in the circle to the joy of the spectators.
When the parade was over, neighbors and friends chatted with each other while others went to C & L Frosty for some refreshments. The Fire Department held an Open House. Their trucks and other vehicles were parked around the fire house, with the hatches open, for people to see the equipment they use in their official duties. Kids eagerly climbed on board fire trucks and a small junior fire truck while their parents took cute photos. People also headed to the food trucks and beer garden at Sherbstock to get settled in for a great day of music.
