Marie Welton Thomas, of Medfield MA, went to be with the Lord on January 4, 2021, at the age of 88. Born in Poughkeepsie NY, she was the daughter of the late Robert E. and Johanna (Haverkamp) Welton. Devoted mother of Mark Thomas and his wife Rebecca of Niskayuna NY, Karen Johnson and her husband Kevin of Natick MA, the late John Rogers Thomas, Jr., and his surviving wife Patricia Thomas of Holliston MA. Loving grandmother of Johanna, Harry, Sam, Gregory, Jessica, and Irene Thomas, Jocelyn Moruzzi, and Samuel, Cole, Grace, and Luke Johnson. Sister of the late Barbara Jean Varuzzo.
Marie grew up in the wake of the Great Depression. At the age of 12, Marie cared for her infant sister while her parents worked. She became an accomplished baton twirler and went on to win the New York State baton twirling championship at age 16. Gifted with a beautiful voice, Marie sang as a soloist with the IBM Dance Band and the IBM Mixed Chorus. Marie appreciated beautiful things and had a keen eye for fashion and design. Two of her hobbies included creating stained glass fixtures and restoring antiques. She enjoyed working in the garden, and cultivated an 85-foot flower garden bed. Marie was a Real Estate Agent for many years for C.J. Patrick and Lavery Real Estate in Poughkeepsie NY, and later for Medfield Properties in Medfield MA. She was a member of the choir at her church home, Trinitarian Congregational Church in Wayland MA. Marie’s wonderful sense of humor, love of laughter and live-for-the-moment personality did not prevent her from being a shrewd negotiator, and one who rarely lost a contest when “the right thing to do” was at stake. Above all, Marie delighted in spending time with her family, always extending herself to show love and support.
Relatives and friends were invited to attend the visiting hours on Thursday January 7, in the John Everett & Sons Funeral Home, 4 Park St., NATICK COMMON. Funeral services were private. Interment took place on Saturday January 9, at Rural Cemetery in Poughkeepsie, NY. Donations in Marie’s memory may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (www.stjude.org/donate).
