This year, Walpole’s educational theater program, Summer Stage, will be pulling out all the stops to celebrate their twentieth anniversary. Summer Stage began in 1997 with the mission to help kids grow as people as much as they grow as performers. Over two decades, Summer Stage has introduced hundreds of young performers to all the wonders of theater, exploring many different aspects of performing, including auditioning, music, mime, improvisation, and Shakespeare.
Summer Stage has always given young performers a place to be themselves, feel part of a strong social group, and build their self-confidence. “We wanted to give kids a theater experience that isn’t just putting on a show. We wanted to give students a real opportunity to learn and build their theater skills,” says Summer Stage lead teacher Dean Calusdian.
This year, Summer Stage is offering three sessions. They are described as follows:
Session One - Fairy Tale-A-Go
June 26 - July 7 (For Ages 7-12)
Younger students will get a thorough introduction to theater and perform a hilarious collection of their favorite fairy tales.
Session Two - Shakespeare Double Feature
July 10 - July 28 (For ages 11-17)
It’s a double helping of fun as Summer Stage performs abridged versions of two of Shakespeare’s most fun and exciting plays.
Session Three - Disney’s "Beauty and the Beast, Jr."
July 31 - August 18 (For ages 11-17)
Summer Stage brings Disney’s magical hit musical to life. There will be plenty of singing and dancing for everyone in the fantastic musical session.
All Sessions are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. at the South Walpole Methodist Church, 1886 Washington St., South Walpole.
