The Westwood High School Varsity Hockey team is back at it, and this year’s group is showing promise. The Wolverines secured their first win of the season last Wednesday evening, a 3-1 victory against TVL foe Bellingham.

Sophomore Cal Guarino (14) defends as coaches and teammates look on.

Westwood Senior Ben Lewis (4) carries the puck up the ice.

The Wolverines were playing in their new home, the Canton Ice House, after their old barn, Ponkapoag Rink (Canton) collapsed due to the immense snowfall of February 2015. Since being displaced from Ponkapoag two years ago, the squad lived as nomads last season, dividing its home games between Boch Ice (Dedham) and Nobles (Dedham). The Ice House is a great new facility with proper bleachers for the “Fan Den” and nice new dressing rooms.

The Westwood boys came out strong Wednesday right from the start, and while Bellingham’s goalie kept the Blackhawks in it despite Westwood winning the shot count by a large margin, the Wolverines pulled away late for a statement victory.

Senior Ben Lewis scored the first two goals for Westwood, with the first being set up by a beautiful pass at the top of the face-off circle by junior Brian Reissfelder, and the second one coming on the power play, assisted by Aaron Janfaza. Timmy Dalton scored Westwood’s final goal to give the Wolverines a 3-1 edge late in the third period. Justin Anderson was strong in net for the Wolverines, posting 14 saves on the night.

Westwood now stands at 1-1 on the season with after a hard fought 3-0 loss on opening night against TVL powerhouse Medway.
