MathCounts is an afterschool extracurricular club that meets every year from the fall to early spring. Coached by Olive Woodward and Erin Newman, 24 Dover-Sherborn Middle School students joined MathCounts this fall, and the club met weekly. The club’s activities qualified the club for Silver and Gold status.

The Club also has a competition component. The coaches took 10 students to the regional competition at Meadowbrook School in Weston on January 30. The students who competed were Varun Jayanti, Bella Tate, Sophia Tate, Audrey Lin, Angelina Zhang, Riya Bahadur, Ashley Gong, Stephanie Yu, Eric Zhang and Eric Yang.

Yang placed second as an individual, Angelina Zhang placed fifth as an individual and their first team of four, comprising Jayanti, Tate, Angelina Zhang and Eric Yang placed second in the team competition. This second place finish qualified the first team to go to the state competition on March 5 at Wentworth Institute in Boston, where the team placed seventh out of 26 teams.

Angelina Zhang placed second overall in the individual competition, qualifying her to go to the National MathCounts competition in Washington, D.C. on May 5.
