WestwoodWinds, Westwood’s community concert band, will hold its eighth summer concert Monday, August 7, at 6:30 in Westwood High School’s Cafeteria Courtyard. The concert is free and open to all. Audience members may bring lawn chairs or a blanket and a picnic to enjoy the music with an evening breeze. In the event of rain, the concert will be held in the WHS Auditorium.

The theme for this year’s concert is “An American Medley.” The concert plays on the word “Medley.” While this word has an obvious association with music, it also represents the make-up of America’s people. “The program will presents a medley of songs as well as songs from a medley of some of the cultural, ethnic and racial make-up of America’s population, including jazz, rock, and popular songs that have been influenced by the cultures of Europe, Africa and the Caribbean,” says Jim Giurleo, WestwoodWinds founder and music director.

Over 30 musicians have been holding weekly practices to prepare for what promises to be an evening of enjoyable entertainment and a celebration of local musical talent. Members range in age from their early teens to retirees who will bring their skills and passion for music making to this concert.

WestwoodWinds was created as a way to provide opportunities for current and former Westwood High School graduates and community amateur musicians to continue their musical pursuits during the summer. “Many people miss the pleasure and reward of making music after their high school experience in a school band. WestwoodWinds provides another opportunity for young and old to come together to flex their musical muscles once more,” says Giurleo. “Unlike swimming or riding a bicycle, one may get a little rusty but really never forgets how to play.”
