The Westwood Council on Aging held its inaugural Winter Luncheon on January 11, marking the beginning of what is anticipated to be an annual tradition due to its positive reception. The focus of these luncheon events is to provide a communal space for community members to relax and connect. Attendees were treated to a meal consisting of soup, salad, and a sandwich, allowing ample time for conversations among themselves. This occasion served as an excellent opportunity for seniors to share their plans for the new year and forge new connections within the community.

For many attendees, this luncheon offered the first reunion with friends since the onset of the new year, providing a platform for joyful discussions about holiday experiences. Conversations also revolved around upcoming offerings from the Council on Aging, prompting interest and potential attendance. The event successfully attracted individuals to the center who might not typically visit, fostering the creation of new connections within the community.

Adding to the ambiance, high school musician Charles Goodman was invited by the Council on Aging to play guitar and sing during the meal. Goodman curated a setlist, selecting songs like “Oreo Cookie Blues,” “Sweet Baby James,” and “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” based on the audience's preferences. The music sparked lively conversations, with attendees sharing memories associated with the songs.

Lina Arena-DeRosa, the Director of the Council on Aging, expressed her belief that such events are integral to their mission. She aims to facilitate community engagement by providing opportunities for people to come together, share a meal, and connect. The success of the Winter Luncheon has prompted plans to establish it as an annual event, generating enthusiasm among attendees for future community meals.

The Council on Aging serves as a valuable resource for seniors looking to engage with their community and participate in various programs. While the luncheons are just one among numerous daily events and activities, they exemplify the center's commitment to fostering connections and keeping the community active.
