The annual Westwood Town-Wide Pinewood Derby raced into the Downey School cafeteria last weekend.
With 67 scouts participating in the race, the event provided a fun challenge to area Cub Scouts from all den levels. Each Cub Scout competed against their own den members to open the race, with the winners of each race facing off against other winners until a final winner is crowned.
This year, Weblo Nicholas Albrecht took home first prize for his car, “The Incinerator.” His car maintained an average speed of 226 MPH.
Wolf scout Sam Cochran came in second with his car "Sir Speed,” and Wolf scout Jacob Liu rounded out the top three in third place with his car “Blue.”
Brady Hassenfuss picked up an award for the best overall Pinewood Derby car design.
The annual Pinewood Derby begins with Cub Scouts creating their own Pinewood Derby race cars. The scouts are provided with a block of wood, nails and wheels and are tasked with creating the fastest racecar to beat out the competition.
On the Friday night before the race, scouts presented their creations for inspection. The cars were weighed and judged to make sure they are in compliance with the Pinewood Derby’s five-ounce limit.
