The afternoon of September 28 was a lively one at the Westwood Library, when kids were invited to drop in to a program designed to let them unleash both creative and destructive powers. Towers made from newspaper were built and brought down, little green army men were launched from catapults made from popsicle sticks, and a hypothetical life vest was created from bubble wrap.
“We are trying to have more events for tween and teen kids,” said Hannah Gavalis, Children’s Librarian. “Today, we have some small challenges they can drop in and do. It’s a one-time event, but some will be recurring and all will be drop-in - no registration required.”
As a small, green, plastic soldier flew across the room, Hannah explained the library’s ongoing efforts to engage with Westwood kids and pointed out a new fall initiative of programs for middle schoolers. The Just for Fun Teen Book Club is meeting on November 2 to talk about “I Am Princess X” by Cherie Priest and on December 7 to discuss “Elsewhere” by Gabrielle Zevin.
Kids in sixth to eighth grade are also invited to Middle School Monster Mash on Friday, October 29 from 3-4 p.m. No registration is required, costumes are encouraged, and candy will be abundant. Fall is set to be a fun season for the Westwood Library.
