The South Asian Association of Westwood (SAAW) held their annual Westwood Diwali Festival (Festival of Lights) at Westwood High School. This community-wide event showcased a variety of South Asian culture, pageantry, food, fashion, and rituals.
This magical evening was from 6pm to 10pm and included multiple events throughout. Many Westwood guests and others made a great effort to wear special occasion Indian dress which added a visual delight for all in attendance.
Upon arrival, attendees were welcome to check in and take pictures with one another. As they walked down the hallway towards the cafeteria, there was an Exhibition of Paintings by Artist Basant Sahu. According to the SAAW website, “Basant Sahu is a sensitive & creative artist, whose work generally reflects culture and life in the rural state of Chhattisgarh. He has exhibited his paintings in more than 10 solo and national exhibitions and more than 15 group exhibitions.” The paintings included within this exhibition were available for purchase at the end of evening.
Right before the entrance of the cafeteria, appetizers and beverages were served as everyone mingled together. There was also a kids activity table for little ones to craft with friends. The Opening Ceremony started promptly at 7pm where there was the Diya lighting, dance performances and multiple speeches. This was followed by a delicious Indian dinner featuring Palak Paneer, Bombay Aloo, Butter Chicken, Samosas and more. Desserts of Gulab Jamun and Masala Chai were additionally served after dinner. To close out the night, guests were able to get henna tattoos done and enjoy the open dance floor with the DJ.
Co-organizer Sukanya was also in attendance, welcoming and taking photos with guests. When talking with her about this incredible evening, she highlighted just how much it means to the community and how wonderful it is to see everyone come together to celebrate Diwali.
