The weeks leading up to the holidays were filled with festive music and entertaining theater as the students from WHS band, choral and drama departments held performances.
Leading off the holiday festivities on December 1, the WHS Concert Band and Wind Ensemble, led by Mr. Steven Scott, entertained the audience with a variety of holiday and traditional songs.
On December 8, Dr. McDonald led the nearly 300 choral students through a whimsical evening of holiday songs. Students started the show in the lobby, performing Christmas carols and welcoming the audience members as they streamed through the auditorium doors. From there, it was an evening full of music as the combined chorus, Song Sisters, Brookes Brothers and a cappella groups all sang several holiday classics.
Rounding out the December schedule for the High School was the WHS One Act Festival. Twenty individual one act plays were performed at each show, all the original works of the student directors. Held in the little theater, the packed crowd enjoyed an intimate evening of theater. The show offered a glimpse into the perceptions of the young directors, using short scenes with small sets and few props. This design let the audience focus on the players and their portrayal of a scene, as they used their acting talent to bring the scene to life. With titles like “The Gas Mart Amendment,” “History of Why the Chicken Crossed the Road,” “DMV Tyrant,” and “Drugs Are Bad #2,” students delivered a humorous night for all that attended.
Supported by Stephen Wrobleski, Brian McManimon, and student lighting and sound designers, the evening proved to be another amazing effort put forth by the WHS drama department.
