The Wellesley Community Center, located at 219 Washington Street, Wellesley Hills, is bringing back The Great Wellesley Train Show for the third year in a row on Saturday, November 5, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. According to WCC Executive Director, Stephen Beach, "this year’s show will actually have slightly larger layouts and with the addition of new clubs, it really makes for an exciting event.”
The Hub Division, one of the co-sponsors of this event, is a regional member of the National Model Railroad Association and will be contributing many a layout from their inventory of modules. Modules are prefabricated 4 x 4 foot sections that are ready-made dioramas and easily assembled like a mosaic, allowing for almost any theme - landscapes, farms, cities, and more. This particular show will feature a variety of scales and themes.
“Many people are familiar with HO gauge, the most popular scale within the hobby,” said Beach, “but there we will also showcase the N gauge, the really small setups that pack incredible detail into a relatively small space, and the traditional O gauge, or Lionel gauge, as most casual observers call them. The G gauge is great because it is the largest setup with the widest track size. It is most commonly seen in Britain as part of outdoor garden and landscaped themes. Also, look for a dedicated Thomas The Tank Engine setup - new to the show this year."
The Mass Bay Railroad Enthusiast Club, the other co-sponsor of this event, will offer vintage railroading from a different perspective - MBRE charters real trains on pre-planned excursions, "which the group is very eager to chat about and has been very popular in the past as well," said Beach.
“And yes, there will be free coffee!” added Beach. “And food will be provided by Express Gourmet of Wellesley Lower Falls.”
The show’s roadside beacon will boast a large, one-quarter scale, diesel engine and rolling stock replica of the Boston and Maine Railroad - on static display out in front of the Wellesley Community Center by Washington Street. “The setup will be well over 10 feet in length and will feature what is known as a narrow gauge,” added Beach.
Parking is free with free admission.
“This is a fun-filled family event that will fascinate young persons and grown-ups to the history and intrigue of model railroading,” said Beach. “We are very fortunate to have this show is underwritten by Needham Bank."
