The town of Wellesley is still searching for answers this week after a man drowned in Morse’s Pond on Tuesday, October 4. Police responded to a 911 call at 1:17 p.m., indicating that a male was possibly drowning on the College Road side of Morse’s Pond. The call had come from the male party’s co-worker, who had noticed him struggling in the water after borrowing a canoe and paddling out a short time earlier.
“There was a co-worker present when he took the canoe out, so it was a witnessed event that he had struggled swimming when in the water,” said Lt. Marie Cleary of the Wellesley Police Department. “As soon as it was realized that he was struggling in the water, that co-worker called 911.”
Responding officers noted an overturned canoe, as well as some personal effects in the water.
“Initially, plainclothes officers from the Wellesley Police Department went into the water to rescue the individual,” said Lt. Marie Cleary. The officers eventually turned over the water rescue operation to the Wellesley Fire Department.
After nearly three hours of search and rescue efforts, a male victim was recovered, 40-50 feet offshore in about 15 feet of water. The victim was later identified by police as 35 year-old landscaper Jonathan Pujol-Custodio, of Boston, who had been at work when he borrowed the canoe and paddled into the pond.
There do not appear to be any indications of foul play.
