This month, on March 21 at 4:00 p.m., the Wellesley Community Center (WCC) will present David Oliver as the next guest at Gil Stubbs’ World of Magic.
David Oliver is a master of presenting classical magic in a contemporary manner. His magic has been featured on the Discovery Channel, “The Early Show” on CBS, and the Documentary Channel films “American Carny” and “Magic Camp.” He has also served as a magical consultant on “ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.”
For 18 years, David Oliver has been a producer of and featured in Boston’s only magic and comedy show, “The Mystery Lounge,” and for the past 17 years, David Oliver has been the most requested guest performer in Broadway’s longest-running magic show, “Monday Night Magic.” For over twenty years, this neoclassic artist has entertained audiences on cruises, in hotels and at resorts to rave reviews.
Among magicians, David Oliver is well-known for his former dove act, his world-class sleight-of-hand and his offbeat comedy. David and his magic have been featured in numerous magic periodicals and books, and he has lectured and performed at conventions around the U.S. His skills as a stage manager and director have been utilized by several conventions and variety shows as well.
Oliver is perhaps best known for his dedication to promoting, coaching and mentoring magic’s youth. Along with private students, David has been a senior counselor at the Tannen’s Magic Camp in NY and PA for more than 20 years, and has run several other magic related camps and programs in NY, CT and MA throughout his career. He has also been the adult director of “The John Calvert-David Oliver, Boston Area Assembly #29 of the Society of Young Magicians” for an unprecedented 28 years.
In June of 2013, after years of declining health due to Bird Fancier’s Lung (due to working with the beautiful, snow-white doves in his show for almost 30 years), David Oliver survived three cardiac arrests, then had both of his lungs replaced during a grueling 16-hour, double lung transplant surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.
Months of recuperation, rehabilitation and recovery have given David a second chance at life. His entire story was chronicled as the featured cover story in the January 2014 issue of MAGIC Magazine. David also credits the love and support from his family, friends, students, and the magic community at large and of course the amazing staffs at MGH and BMC for the continued success of his recovery.
David Oliver is back, and he is coming to the WCC. To register for free tickets, email the Wellesley Community Center at [email protected] or call the main office at (781-235-4172).
