Big screen in little Wellesley

On Thursday, August 11, at around 8:00 p.m., the Davis Art Museum on the Wellesley College campus sponsored a free event in which locals had a chance to see the movie “Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief.” The movie was shown on a screen outside of the museum.

This movie, starring Logan Lerman, Pierce Brosnan, and Sylvester Stallone, follows the story of Percy Jackson, a troubled teenager who discovers he is the son of Poseidon, the ancient Greek god of the sea. Percy has to retrieve the lightning bolt of Zeus (Sean Bean), King of the gods, which he has been accused of stealing. To do so, he must embark on a cross-country trip, fighting off monsters from Greek mythology all the way.

Despite the uncomfortably hot and humid weather (roughly 95 degrees, although it cooled down as the night went on), around forty to fifty people (and five or six dogs) of all ages showed up. They brought their own beach towels and folding chairs to the red brick courtyard outside the Davis, ate the free popcorn that was being made, and drank the free beer that was available. Soda and homemade ice cream sandwiches were also for sale.

The Davis Museum, according to the volunteers working at the movie that evening, hosted this event in an effort to connect to the local community despite being closed for renovations. It would seem, given the enthusiastic crowd, that they succeeded in this goal. “Percy Jackson” was the fourth movie to be screened in the Davis Rediscovered Summer Film Series.
