Yvonne Unger and Nancy Present-Van Broekhoven will be exhibiting their watercolors for the month of September at the Wellesley Public Library’s Wakelin Room. The show, entitled “Nature, Naturally,” reflects the inspiration they find in the everyday world of nature.
This will be the second time Nancy and Yvonne have collaborated in exhibiting their work. The interest they have and the color palette they choose make such a collaboration understandable. As Yvonne notes, “The images I paint are inspired by what I think of as ‘everyday nature,’ those small observations of the natural world that occur in the midst of my daily activities; it might be fall leaves mired in a puddle or a grassy fringe along a pond’s edge. I paint in an attempt to share that ever-present nature that I find so delightfully and unexpectedly beautifully.”
Similarly, Nancy notes: “As an artist I want people to appreciate the environment surrounding us and find the beauty within those natural spaces. I try to paint each creature in its natural setting and focus on the one particular element which captivates me with its singular beauty … whether it is the gossamer wings of the dragon fly or the intricate design of a snake’s skin.”
Both artists use unexpected materials in their paintings. Yvonne paints primarily on aquaboard, a surface created by bonding a thin layer of clay to a Masonite panel. Once the work is completed, a polymer varnish is applied for water resistance and protection from ultraviolet damage. Nancy, while painting primarily on watercolor paper, often adds ink, rice paper, fiber paste and even feathers to her work.
The artists will be hosting a reception open to the public on Saturday, September 23rd from 2-4 in the Wakelin Room of the Wellesley Free Library at 530 Washington Street.
