The Walpole Footlighters braved the snow this past weekend to open their winter production of “Incorruptible: A Dark Comedy about the Dark Ages,” by Michael Hollinger.

The play, directed by Roger Campbell, tells the story of a monastery in Priseaux, France awaiting the arrival of the Pope in circa 1250 A.D., back when the Dark Ages were, well, pitch black.

“I picked the show because it’s very different than what this theater has done in the past,” Campbell said. “It’s pretty much straight comedy with plenty of absurd humor, which is my favorite kind of humor. If you want to have a bunch of laughs, this is the place to be.”

“Incorruptible” has a small cast with a large amount of talent. Steve Small, Paul MacPhee, Michael Dornisch, and Ed Churchill play the four monks of the monastery whose patron saint has not worked a miracle in thirteen years.

All seems lost until the monks take a lesson from a one-eyed minstrel, played by Peter McElhinney, who teaches them a crazy way to pay off their old debts.

According to Roger Campbell, “the trick to being a good director is to get good actors, and we’ve got great actors.”

The snowstorm did not hinder the cast and crew as they opened the show on Friday. Although the audience on opening night was smaller than expected, Campbell was proud to say that his cast performed as if they had a full house, and that their biggest concern was parking and not ticket sales.

“Incorruptible” will continue to run at the Footlighters Playhouse, 2 Scout Rd, Walpole, for the next two weekends. It will be performed February 12, 13, 19 and 20 at 8 p.m. and February 14 and 21 at 2 p.m.

Tickets may be obtained by calling 508-668-8446 or on the Footlighters website at footlighters.com.
