Beautiful weather finally returned to this year’s Apple Harvest Fair, the Union Congregational Church’s (UCC) biggest annual fundraising event. This beloved rain-or-shine celebration was subject to the former the previous two years, so everyone involved was delighted by the arrival of blue skies, sunshine, and warmth for this year’s festivities.
“This is a great way to spend the last official weekend of summer,” one UCC volunteer said as she whizzed by to help out at a booth. “We’re loving this weather!”
For over 50 years, locals have eagerly anticipated this cherished East Walpole tradition. And even though it gets bigger every year, it still has such a small-town feel to it. With traditional midway games, vendors selling crafts and baked goods, pony rides, a book sale, and a toy shop - where attendees could purchase gently used treasures - it almost felt as if stepping back in time.
Anyone arriving with an appetite was in luck, as hot dogs, burgers, pizza, chips, popcorn, donuts, fried dough, and apple crisp were all available for sale. In addition, tickets could be purchased to enjoy some snuggles with baby animals, a bounce house, a robotics show, glitter tattoos, and more. There was also a huge silent auction available for those wishing to make a bid on some great items. It seemed like there was truly something for everyone to enjoy.
Arguably, the highlight of the fair was the trackless train. This popular offering has evolved quite a bit over time: from the long lines of yesteryear, which eventually turned into a clever reservation-type waiting system, and, more recently, the addition of a second train. As young riders and their caregivers waved and enjoyed a scenic ride, friends and family looked on, taking photos and waving back.
The Apple Harvest Fair is an important event for the , with portions of the fair supporting both the Walpole Food Pantry as well as their Neighbors in Need Fund. As always, the event takes place on the grounds of the church at 55 Rhoades Avenue and spills into neighboring Bird Park.
