There are certain subjects that lend themselves to children better than others. English, for example, is an easily presented subject through storytelling. However, subjects such as science or math can be harder to get kids excited about. This is where Science Tellers comes in. Created in 2004, this group combines storytelling and science to create an exciting, interactive experience for kids up to fourteen years old.
On Tuesday, March 28, the Walpole Public Library hosted a Science Teller. The room was packed with children and parents alike, and the energy of Andrea, the presenter, was palpable – it spread throughout the room. Andrea did a number of experiments with pressure, a particularly appealing and enticing phenomenon to kids due to the high number of pops, bangs, and explosions.Everything Andrea presented was done with energy and excitement, and it was impossible to not feel similarly about his experiments. She explained the concept of pressure through a story, discussing how a child had to return books to his school, but when he went to his garage to get on his bike, the tires were flat. She stopped throughout so she could do experiments demonstrating what was going on in the story, like pumping up a bike tire until it pops. The presentation catered to the parents as well as to the children in the audience.
This event was a part of a longer series of events hosted in Walpole by the Walpole Coordinated Family and Community Engagement Program. Yvette Sammarco brought “Creative Mixtures” and “Super Structures” earlier in the month.
Those in attendance at Science Tellers were engaged the entire time. Science Tellers proves that science can be exciting for people of all ages, and has found an ingenious way to do so.
