Polo in the Country is a festive fall Sunday afternoon for family, friends and especially children. It is held at the Norfolk Hunt Club Steeplechase Course, 240 North Street, Medfield, on Sunday, September 11. Gates open at 11:00 a.m., activities start at 12:15 p.m., and the polo match begins at 1:00 p.m.
This is a highlight of the Medfield area, with attendance growing to over 1,000. Proceeds are used for the benefit of preserving and protecting the natural environment, open space, and recreational areas.
The polo match is between two historic teams: Dedham Polo and the Norfolk Hunt Polo. Matches have been a long-standing event going back to 1888. It’s exciting to play - not to mention very fast and thrilling to watch. Teams each have three players and compete in a six chukka (period of time) game with a halftime break.
During halftime, the parade of the Norfolk Hunt Club hounds is a tradition that all will enjoy. Under the leadership of Huntsman Heather Player, the pack of hounds demonstrates amazing obedience, speed, and agility under her control with the assistance of members of the Norfolk Hunt Club.
As a special feature, the Meridian Equi-dance quadrille team will also perform during half-time. Quadrille is a series of precise patterns performed by mounted riders and their horses choreographed to beautiful music.
Always a highlight of the day is the tailgate contest, with awards given to the top four presentations.
There are plenty of other things for children to do including pony rides, face painting, and the highly anticipated “candy toss” held at the end of the match. Food and drinks are on-site.
General admission is $15 for adults and $5 for children 12 years or under, payable as you enter.
Rain date is Sunday, September 18.
