There were nothing but good vibes on Friday, September 13, during Walpole’s Main Street Live event. With the first chilly evening of fall, everyone was ready to celebrate their town with some awesome music and festivities.
Food trucks were already lined up outside the festival as it began. With diverse choices like hamburgers, shawarma, seafood, and chocolate-covered desserts on offer, there seemed to be something that everyone could enjoy. Just feet away from the variety of food trucks was a nearby seating area where neighbors relaxed, enjoyed their meals, and chatted with friends. Parents ate with their kids, while others met with friends after long weeks at work.
For dessert, some people waited in line for chocolate covered strawberries and bananas, while others purchased classic Hawaiian shaved ice. The most coveted item seemed to be the strawberry shortcake; it was popular enough that some visitors appeared to be headed straight for them, even before eating dinner. “They’ve run out so quick before, you just never know,” said one patron as she returned to her table to enjoy her own delicious portion.
The younger members of the crowd, meanwhile, enjoyed the complimentary balloon animals at the event. Near the entrance to the party, kids and their parents patiently waited in line to get their own balloon. Many girls asked for the pink unicorn or a black and white penguin. Others received balloons resembling Mickey Mouse and other familiar characters, which they toted around all night.
The main attraction of the night, though, was the number different bands playing during the festival. As people were socializing and noshing, Won’t Back Down, a Tom Petty and the HeartBreakers tribute band, played on. People couldn’t help but tap their feet and jam out to the catchy tunes.
Above all else, though, Main Street Live presented a perfect opportunity to catch up with old friends. “I recognize so many people,” said 16-year-old Olivia Connor.
Her mother, Helen Connor, spent this year’s Main Street Live event at the Junior Women’s Club both, handing out much-appreciated bug spray and candy. “The sense of community is great,” she commented. :It’s a great cross-section of Walpole.”
For Judy and Paul Desgrosseilliers, the event marked their second year attending the festival, after moving to Walpole last year. They met up with other members of their family and enjoyed an evening of music. “It’s like an old-fashioned street party. Kids, adults, the elderly. Everyone,” said Judy with a smile. “The strawberry shortcake ain’t bad, either,” she added.
With great company, food, and music available in droves, there was something for everyone to enjoy at Main Street Live. More than anything, it was a fantastic excuse to spend time with family and friends, welcome the fall season, and celebrate the Walpole community.
