It is said that in today’s world, children are harder and harder to impress as technology becomes more ubiquitous and toys and games become more complex.
There are few things, however, that remain elusive and maintain their mystique. One of these is magic, which still manages to awe children and adults alike.
Scott Jameson is not just a magician, but an entertainer. On Thursday, July 13, Jameson performed for nearly 40 children and their parents at the Walpole Public Library. The performance was introduced by Youth Services Librarian Kara Dean, who shared that Jameson’s show was in support of the library’s Summer Reading Program. “Mr. Jameson is here through the generosity of a grant from the Walpole Cultural Community Council,” she added.
This year’s Summer Reading Program’s theme is “Build a Better World,” which Jameson worked into his performance from the very beginning.
“Build a better world is a fantastic theme,” he said. “I build all of the things that I use in my show. Every prop that I build starts out as a test. I build a prototype, and then I try it out in my show to see if it works. Let’s broaden our minds!” And with that he was off. Jameson’s show was a wonderful hodgepodge of comedy, juggling, and magic, often choreographed to music. The show was also very hands-on, as Jameson called up a number of children in the audience to help him with his elaborate and entertaining routines.
Jameson’s impressive feats included escaping from a locked chain tied around his wrists, producing knots in previously untied cloths, and juggling four basketballs at one time.
The event, which was free to the public, resulted in a nearly full house, with children of all ages, and adults, enthralled and riveted by Jameson’s craft.
