Lovers of peonies are encouraged to put Tuesday, October 30, on their calendars. That’s when the Norwood Evening Garden Club will host Kathleen Gagan, owner of Peony’s Envy Flower Farm in New Jersey. The meeting will be held at 6:45 p.m. at the Carriage House behind the First Baptist Church, 71 Bond Street, Norwood. The public is invited to attend for a small donation. Refreshments will be served.
Gagan’s pictorial lecture, “Peony Planting, Care & Propagation,” will introduce participants to the different types of peonies, their colors, flower shapes and growth habits. She will show how to properly plant, care for, and propagate peonies including where to plant, methods of planting, spring and fall care, and recognizing and treating diseases. Her lecture will also touch on dividing herbaceous peony roots, grafting tree peony scions and growing peonies from seed.
Gagan is a linguist and international corporate communications consultant turned lady farmer. After a successful career overseas, she returned home to New Jersey and founded Peony’s Envy. She grows peonies because of their resilience, deer-resistance and beauty.
Gagan gives lectures and workshops on peonies across the country. She has presented at the Scott Arboretum Hardy Plant Conference, Longwood Gardens, the Hortus Club of New York, the Martha Stewart Living Show and many national flowers shows, most recently the Newport Flower Show, and garden clubs.
