Anyone in search of family-friendly, local weekend plans need look no further: Walpole Children’s Theatre (WCT) is back!
This time, they’re presenting “King Midas and the Touch of Gold” - a perfectly timed winter production, given the excitement surrounding the 2026 Winter Olympics.
We recently had the chance to speak with longtime WCT member Brian Coveney, who also happens to be the director of this 24-karat play.

HOMETOWN WEEKLY: Is this your directorial debut?
BRIAN COVENEY: Yes, this is my first time directing! I joined the cast in 1999 and performed in 16 shows. Since 2015, I’ve been an active member of the crew, participating in about 20 productions behind the scenes. I’ve had my hand in just about every aspect of theater life, so it felt like the right time to lead the charge as director. The first show I was stage manager for was King Midas and the Touch of Gold in 2017, so I’m already quite familiar with the story and its characters.
HW: How are you feeling about it?
BC: I was a bit apprehensive at first, but definitely dove in headfirst. Over the years, I’ve been directed by many of the current crew members and have also seen new faces step into directorial roles. Each director brings their own style and approach, and while I want to make sure we present a great production, my main goal has always been ensuring the cast has fun.
HW: Have you taken on similar roles before?
BC: Throughout my time with WCT, I’ve served as stage manager, producer, stage crew, house manager, box office sales, and publicity coordinator - I’ve even helped with parking! It just felt like the right time to finally sit in the director’s chair.
HW: Are there any unique challenges to directing after years of performing?
BG: The biggest challenge was deciding on my ‘vision’ and learning how to bring it to life. Standing in the wings all those years as an actor and crew member has definitely prepared me for this. I don’t think I could have achieved the final result without all those experiences.

HW: Anything you’d like to add about the show or WCT in general?
BC: I’m so excited for patrons, friends, and family to see the cast’s hard work. I now have nephews and friends’ children coming to the shows, and I can’t wait to share this with them.”
Enjoy every shining moment of “King Midas and the Touch of Gold” at one of these remaining performances: Friday, Feb. 27 at 7 p.m., and Saturday, Feb. 28 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. All shows take place at Footlighters Playhouse on Scout Road in East Walpole and are suitable for all ages.
