The Westwood 10A team was able to pull out a big win over Whitman to win the Suburban League championship. At the end of 6 innings, the teams were tied, 5-5, forcing them into extra frames.
Solid pitching seemed to define the contest, as Westwood got quality innings out of Paul Dyson, Joey Toti, Devin Hunt, and closer Jake Mason. The hurlers were supported with great plays in the field by Danny O’Sullivan, Jake Quinn, Tommy Techeria and Finn Cahill.
Of course, it wasn’t all defense - Will Campbell, Joey Hannon and Andy Weeman and Paul Dyson all played their role in driving the Westwood boys to victory.
In the top of the 8th inning, Alex Dayton was able to steal home. Paul Dyson then stepped up bat and hit a 2 run homerun, putting Westwood up, 8-5. With a solid lead, Jake Mason came in to pitch in the bottom of the 8th inning and was able to shut the Whitman team down to clinch the victory.
“The way this game ended just capped off an amazing six weeks of baseball,” said Coach John Techeria. “You couldn’t write a better ending. Baseball aside, this group of kids made my summer. They are polite, respectful, sincere, kind, funny and much more. I have been coaching in Westwood since my oldest first played and every year I am more impressed at such a great group of kids we have in this town. It truly is a reflection on the parents and the values and lessons taught to them.”
