Westwood boys soccer qualifies for postseason

After qualifying for the postseason thanks to a 6-1 win against Bellingham on October 15, the Westwood boys soccer team fell to Ashland on October 22 1-0. The match is the second time the team has faced Ashland, but the first loss to the team.
“Ashland out worked, out hustled, and out played us. They deserved the 1-0 win because of the energy and work that they brought to the game,” said Westwood boys soccer head coach Jon Grant.

So far this season, the Wolverines have gone 9-4-3. The team started out the season strong with two back-to-back wins against Hopkinton and Dover-Sherborn, but fell to Medway. After another win the team tied against Holliston 2-2.

After that, the Wolverines went on to win three matches in a row, against Millis, Ashland and Medfield. A loss and a tie against Norton and Hopkinton broke that streak.

After winning against Dover-Sherborn on October 8, the team has gone on to win and lose an equal number of matches.

Grant noted that while the team started off strong, the most recent loss against Ashland has does have him concerned about the team’s success in the playoffs.

“I’m concerned about which Westwood team is going to show up to play [in the playoffs],” Grant said. “The goal this week is to get back to how we were playing for most of the season. These last two games will be a good indication for us.”

Despite his concerns, Grant is feeling optimistic about heading into the postseason.

“I am confident that our performance will be the opposite and hopefully we can put together a run similar to last years,” Grant said.

The team’s final regular season game is scheduled for October 29 against Norton.
