On Tuesday, October 22, 2024, Walpole High School’s girls’ volleyball team faced off against Division 1 powerhouse Natick at Elm Street School in Walpole, following a thrilling five-set victory over Norwood the previous day.
The match also marked Senior Night for Walpole, celebrating six graduating players: Mia Destito, Sharlotte Stazinski, Sydney Bissonette, Carlie Knight, Briella Clinton, and Maran Gallivan. This accomplished group is returning to the state tournament for the second consecutive year under the guidance of head coach Zachary Okolowitcz, affectionately known as Coach O. A former collegiate player, Okolowitcz also coaches the Walpole boys’ volleyball team in the spring and is known for his deep knowledge of the sport and positive impact on his players.
Senior captains Destito and Stazinski bring energy and enthusiasm to every match, which was especially evident against Natick. The Timberwolves’ defense stood out, relying on constant communication and skillful coordination to counter opponents’ spikes and set up successful attacks. Walpole’s defensive strategy has proven effective, enabling them to compete closely with top Bay State League teams, which have won the last six Division 1 state championships. Earlier in the season, Walpole even took powerhouse Needham to overtime in one set, hinting at a promising future for the Timberwolves.
In Tuesday’s match, Walpole initially dominated, winning the first two sets, 27-25 and 25-23. Clinton’s pivotal block tied the score at 20 in the first set, sparking Walpole’s momentum. In the second set, strong defense helped Walpole secure an early lead, thrilling a packed, standing-room-only gym at Elm Street School.
However, Natick regained momentum in the following sets, pushing the match to a fifth and final set. With the score tied at 6-6, Natick went on a decisive run, ultimately winning 15-7 and ending Walpole’s four-match winning streak.
Walpole finishes the regular season with a 7-9 record and is seeded 14th in the Division 2 state rankings. Despite their record, they boast one of the highest opponent rankings in Division 2, due to a tough schedule featuring many of the Boston Globe’s Top 20 teams, including numerous Division 1 programs. Last year, Walpole made it to the state tournament but exited in the first round. Now, the Timberwolves await their first-round opponent for the 2024 state tournament, set to begin on Wednesday, October 30.
