Walpole native Jack Bushway and the UMass-Boston track and field team finished in third place overall at the Little East Conference (Division III) New England Alliance championships at Bridgewater State University on Saturday afternoon, and in doing so, made a little history.

Serving as one of the four legs in the 4X800 relay team, Bushway along with Jimmy Cannon (Quincy), Jack Davis (Southwick), and Prosper Lubega (Watertown) broke the school record with a time of 8:41.33, finishing .22 seconds ahead of the previous record of 8:41.11.

Although the record-breaking time by Bushway and the gang only resulted in a fifth-place finish in the event due to some stiff competition, the effort allowed the Beacons to reach a third-place team finish with 114 overall points.

Before graduating from Walpole High in 2017 and choosing to run track at UMB, Bushway ran both cross-country and track and field all four years for the Rebels. Bushway earned the Coaches’ Award three times throughout his high school tenure, and also received the Jim and Betty Logan Scholarship. As a sophomore in 2014, Bushway helped lead the Walpole cross-country team to a Bay State Conference title, as well as an Eastern Mass Division III title. Now, the former Rebel can add breaking the UMass-Boston school record in the 4X800 relay at the Little East Championships to his already storied resume as a runner.
