The 2020-2021 high school winter athletic season finally began this past week. The Walpole boys and girls varsity hockey teams, as well as the boys and girls varsity basketball teams, all got their seasons underway, with three of the four teams picking up victories.
• The reigning Division I South champion boys varsity hockey team earned a 3-0 win against Milton at Rodman Arena on Saturday night. Declan Hunter, senior captain Kevin McElaney and Eddie Jackson supplied the scoring for Walpole. Goaltender Jack Curran picked up where he left off last March with a shutout in net. Walpole only allowed five shots on net en route to the win. Walpole will play a home-and-home with Needham this week before hosting Weymouth on January 20.
• Girls varsity hockey tied Milton, 4-4, on Saturday night at Ulin Arena. Lucy Verderber, Kerrin McMillan, Jessica Tosone and Emily DeSimone supplied the scoring for Walpole. The Walpole girls will travel to Weymouth on January 20.
• Girls varsity basketball earned a dominant 53-16 victory at Milton on Friday night. Sophomore Brooke Walonis led the way with a game-high 16 points. Chinenye Odenigbo also led Walpole with 11 points. Walpole will be be back in action on January 19 at Weymouth.
• Boys varsity basketball earned a 49-33 victory against Milton on Friday night to open up their season. Walpole will return to action at home on January 19 against Weymouth.
