Greater Walpole girls win championship

The Greater Walpole Girls U15 team, coached by Steve Hearon, Kevin Birch, and Steve Govoni, recently won their first Girls U15 Boston South Town Cup after defeating Canton by a score of 5-3. After losing, 6-5, to Canton earlier during the round robin play, the team was eager for the rematch. Greater Walpole jumped out early and held the lead, 2-1, at the end of the half. The second half was pretty much the same tight play. Greater Walpole scored first with a shorthanded goal by Elena Govoni. Canton answered two minutes later, with Olivia Maffeo scoring, assisted by Abigail Murphy. Canton’s Audrey Coen then tied the game with ten minutes left. Looking like the two teams may go into overtime, Walpole’s Kelly Homes scored the game winner with four minutes remaining in the game. Walpole added an empty-net insurance goal, giving them the championship win.
