On Tuesday May 6, 2025, Walpole High School’s boys’ volleyball team took on the Weymouth High School Wildcats at Elm Street School in Walpole.

The Walpole boys’ volleyball team is in its second formal season of varsity existence. Each match is a growth opportunity. The team plays in the incredibly tough Bay State Conference (BSC). The top four teams in the Boston Globe rankings are from the BSC: Brookline, Newton North, Needham and Natick. Newton North and Needham have won the last four Division 1 state championships. Weymouth was 7-6 coming into the match with the Timberwolves.

Walpole High Mathematics Teacher Zachary Okolowitcz is the head coach. Coach O. is also the coach of the Walpole girls’ volleyball team in the fall. It was his initiative to create a boys’ team in 2023. In 2024, his persistence paid off as the team was formally added as a Bay State Conference competitor. The interest in the sport is growing at Walpole.

Weymouth took the first set 25-10. Walpole fell behind early to start the match before Coach O called a timeout to right the ship. The Timberwolves played better in the second half of the set. Singer was especially strong with his communication along the back line. It was noticeably lacking when he wasn’t on the floor.
The Wildcats captured the second set 25-12. A spectacular team play by Nunes and then Odenigbo kept the score at 5-2. It was 8-6 Weymouth before they extended their lead.

The Timberwolves showed some true mettle in the third set. The score was tied at 6. Singer made a great off court save to get the score to 9-7. It was 16-13 before the Wildcats went on a finishing run to end the set 25-18.

Walpole continues the journey looking for their first set win of the 2025 season. They have two more home matches against Braintree and Natick in May. The future is bright for the Timberwolves.
