The Westwood Wolverines varsity volleyball took on the Westborough Warriors in the semi-finals of the MIAA Division 2 State Finals. Westwood came out strong and fought the entire match, ultimately falling to Westborough 3-0.
Westwood came out strong, giving everything they had to play. Freshman Lulu Fenton was a key player from the beginning, digging out hard plays to keep them fighting. Senior Captain Katherine Sanel sent over a huge spike to earn Westwood a point. Senior Captain Angelina Homsy was able to tip the ball over the net, sending Westborough scrambling. Fenton sent over a huge spike, but Westwood was still behind 15-5. Sanel had a massive spike, showing her power on the net. Homsy sent over an unreturned ace on her service streak. Junior Olivia Leyden and Sanel had huge saves at the net, blocking what Westborough sent over. Fenton had a huge diving save, to try and help stage a comeback. Westborough took the set 25-17.
Westwood came back fighting in the second set, fighting for every point and to play every single ball. Senior Captain Francessca Gennari had a huge spiking point. Fenton continues to prove herself a key player with multiple spikes and digs. Sanel was vital on the court with a spiking point and a tip-in over the net. Homsy was also able to sneak a tip-in on Westborough to earn Westwood another point on the board. Senior Madelyn Resha contributed on the court, putting balls into play for her team. Westborough took the set 25-11.
The third set saw Westwood fight for every ball and recover every play. Sanel sent over a huge spike for a point. Senior Imogen Roberts had a two-point service streak to help Westwood gain on Westborough. Gennari helped to rescue a play off the net, getting the earned point. Fenton had a tip-in at the net, but Westwood was still down 10-4. Gennari put up a few huge saves of plays, helping Senior Meaghan Greally send over a powerful spike. Sanel had a critical spike to regain service, helping to try and stage a comeback. Westborough took the final set 25-11, ending Westwoods playoff run.
The Westwood Wolverines ended their playoff run against Westborough in the semi-finals. While the season didn’t end how they wanted it, Westwood volleyball still had a historic season. Their 18-4 record was historic for the school and they competed in the semi-finals for the first time in the team's history. Westwood is looking forward to their next season, and wishing the best of luck to all of their seniors.
