The Needham High boys’ swim team had high hopes entering the season, despite having a lot of youth on its roster. After a strong start, the Rockets entered the heart of the schedule with a lot of confidence, as it got ready to face the perennial powers in the Bay State Conference.
Needham rolled through wins against Newton North and Framingham, both of which are regularly contenders not only in the league but also in sectionals, and went into last Friday’s regular season finale against Wellesley unbeaten.
While the Raiders managed to pull out a 94-92 victory at Babson College and finished their regular season undefeated, the Rockets had already done enough to win the Carey division crown.
In the Wellesley meet, Needham rallied to tie it 86-86 heading into the final event. After taking first place in the 100-meter freestyle to cut the Wellesley lead to just six, Needham then took first, second, and fifth in the 100-meter breaststroke to tie the meet. Wellesley did enough to claim an extra two points in the 400-meter freestyle relay to get the win.
Next up for Needham swimming is the Bay State Conference meet, which will be on Wednesday at Newton North and Thursday at Brookline High.
