Medfield High sophomore Maggie McCarthy was chosen as  the Tri-Valley League’s Most Valuable Player in a vote by league coaches over the weekend, head coach Mark Nickerson announced on Twitter on Monday.

McCarthy has been the team’s leading scorer this season and helped the Warriors to a 15-5 regular season and will be hoping to lead Medfield on another run through Div. 2 Central when the postseason gets underway in two weeks.

Nickerson praised McCarthy’s unselfishness and called the win a “team accomplishment.” He also noted that it is “even more special” that McCarthy was voted MVP as an underclassman, as the award tends to be given to seniors.

“I am so thrilled that Maggie has been named MVP,” said Nickerson in an email. “It is a great honor for her and a great honor for the team.”

He added, “Maggie’s impact on our basketball program (not to mention the soccer and lacrosse programs) has been incredible. She has quickly established herself as one of the best athletes to ever attend Medfield High. I had one coach tell me that she was the toughest player to guard that he has ever seen.”

Nickerson continued, “I think what separated Maggie from the pack of MVP candidates was her ability to do it against tough opponents in big games. She has the ability to dominate on both ends of the floor and I believe the coaches in the league saw that and that is why they voted for her.”

“Beyond all of this, Maggie is an incredibly unselfish player and one of the nicest young ladies you will ever meet.”
