Following two tough losses to Hanover and Dedham in the Hanover Holiday Tournament, the Medfield High varsity boys basketball team bounced back with a big 62-56 win over TVL foe Millis on Friday night to get back on a winning note and improve to 4-2 on the year.
Sophomore guard Stephen Williams (12 points, four assists, five rebounds) was the major difference-maker for the Warriors, coming off the bench and logging some key minutes while knocking down some big shots to preserve the six-point win. Medfield head coach Herb Grace praised the efforts of Williams following the win.
“That was a big bounce-back win for us,” said Grace. “Stevie Williams was a huge spark off the bench. We’ve got a big week ahead.”
Junior center John Lowell and junior guard Jake Dubbs were also big-time factors in the win, as Lowell was a force in the paint by snagging rebound after rebound, all while Dubbs ran the ball up the floor and spread it around to open teammates at a premium.
Clutch three-point shooting at the beginning of the fourth quarter by senior guard Steven Loranger (13 points, six assists) allowed the Warriors to build a comfortable nine-point lead heading into the game’s final minutes. After Millis played the foul game and sent Loranger and Dubbs to the foul line, the Warriors were able to hang on for the six-point victory by sinking their free throws and forcing the Mohawks to take some tough shots with lockdown defense.
The Warriors will look to build off of their win against Millis when they travel to Holliston on January 6 before hosting Westwood on January 10.
