The Medfield Girls’ Tennis team has shown promising progress as they navigate through the 2023-2024 season. Adding another victory to their record, the girls secured a hard-fought win against the Holliston Panthers with a score of 3-2 on Wednesday, April 10. Despite facing formidable opposition, the Warriors demonstrated resilience and teamwork, ultimately clinching the victory. With this triumph, the Warriors now boast a 2-1 overall season record.
Contributions from Medfield's first and second doubles teams, in addition to their third singles player, Amy Boylan, bolstered Medfield's final score. Although sophomore Lauren Barr fought valiantly in the first singles competition, she succumbed to Holliston with scores of 0-6, 0-6. Similarly, sophomore Evelyn Buckley showcased early dominance in her first set at second singles, securing a 6-2 victory, but ultimately fell to Holliston in the subsequent sets with scores of 2-6, 1-6.
Despite individual outcomes, the Warriors exhibit unwavering support for each other, reflecting the team's unity and resilience, a sentiment echoed by head coach Beth Eby, who commended the girls' determination on the courts.
“Lauren is my number one player… and she’s given her all... Evelyn is doing her best and comes out strong, but she has tendonitis in her upper arm from her shoulder to her elbow. Amy is my backboard; she gets everything back... My doubles teams are working hard and listening. It’s not two singles players out there; it is a partnership, and they’re just clicking… I’ve told them we win together and lose together,” said Eby.
Medfield's Amy Boylan, competing at third singles, showcased her prowess on the court by defeating Holliston with scores of 6-3, 6-2, thereby earning a crucial point for the Warriors. Additionally, senior captain Mary Palladino, alongside junior Juliet Lane at first doubles, secured victory in their sets with scores of 6-3 and 6-2, contributing another point to Medfield's tally. At second doubles, junior captain Katie Keating and senior captain Stella Tomayko demonstrated resilience and skill, triumphing in their sets with scores of 6-3 and 6-0, clinching the third point for Medfield in the league matchup, resulting in a 3-2 victory.
Head coach Eby emphasized the team's dedication and the dividends of their diligent practice sessions, noting how their hard work translated into success on match day against Holliston” “Everybody has been giving me 110 percent. We’ve had some really good working practices, especially for our doubles. To work on not only hitting cross-court but also hitting down the line, which has been very effective for both of my doubles teams and is clearly reflected in the scores,” said Eby.
