Girls’ swim team season of success

The 2023 girls' swim and dive team achieved historic success during the season, culminating in a state championship. They ended Wellesley's 76-win streak and secured the D1 State Championship.

The team comprised seven freshmen (Sophia Belenkiy, Lara Bobocea, Emm Fritz, Nora Horton, Tessa Jones, Bella Tzouros, Maddy Weirup), six sophomores (Natalie Guarrera, Paige Ingrando, Haley Larson, Emma Manning, Talia Muzikant, Genevieve Smith), ten juniors (Lucy Aswad, Becky Hwang, Izzy Lemaire, Kelly McFarland, Norah Mullen, Mila Piatkov, Julia Rowe, Riley Serlenga, Courtney Tobin, Emma Zhang), and seven seniors (Isabela Bobocea, Ori Fux, Sophie Guarrera, Lucy Mackey, Kylie O'Hearn, Julia Shulman, Chloe Wukitch).

Led by senior captains Ori Fux, Sophie Guarrera, and Lucy Mackey, the team commenced the season strongly with competitive performances in the Bay State Conference, concluding the regular season at 9-1, with their lone defeat against a formidable co-ed Milton team. In the final regular-season meet, they defeated rival Wellesley on senior night, breaking Wellesley's 76-meet win streak.

At the Bay State Conference Championship meet the following week, the team demonstrated dominance in a competitive league. Lucy Mackey secured first place in the 50 Free, while Chloe Wukitch claimed first place in the 500 Free and the 100 Backstroke. The relay teams earned second place, contributing to the team's victory in the BSC Championship title for the first time in two decades.

In the subsequent weeks, the post-season team aimed for personal bests at the South Sectional Meet, where they showcased remarkable performances. Chloe Wukitch secured first place in the 200 Free and 500 Free, Ella Bobocea earned first place in the 200 IM, and the 400-yard freestyle relay, consisting of Julia Shulman, Chloe Wukitch, Lucy Mackey, and Ella Bobocea, broke the high school record with a time of 3:37.22. The team secured second place overall at Sectionals, setting the stage for their final meet of the season – Division 1 States.

At the D1 States Meet, the powerhouse group, comprising seven seniors, four juniors, a sophomore, and a freshman, showcased their depth, earning top places in every event. Notable achievements included:

- Medley Relay: 4th place (Chloe Wukitch, Becky Hwang, Sophie Guarrera, Kylie O'Hearn)

- 200 Free: Chloe Wukitch 2nd, Kylie O'Hearn 4th

- 200 IM: Ella Bobocea 3rd, Julia Shulman 7th

- 50 Free: Lucy Mackey 2nd

- Diving: Lucy Aswad 6th

- 100 Fly: Julia Shulman 5th, Sophie Guarrera 6th, Natalie Guarrera 7th

- 100 Free: Ella Bobocea 2nd

- 500 Free: Chloe Wukitch 2nd

- 200 Free Relay: 1st (Lucy Mackey, Becky Hwang, Julia Shulman, Ella Bobocea)

- 100 Back: Lucy Mackey 2nd, Ori Fux 7th, Natalie Guarrera 14th

- 100 Breast: Becky Hwang 7th

- 400 Free Relay: 1st (Julia Shulman, Chloe Wukitch, Ella Bobocea, Lucy Mackey)

The Rockets amassed 335 points at Division 1 States, securing the title of State Champions for the first time. Congratulations to the athletes, coaches, families, and fans for an incredible 2023 season. Everyone anticipates the addition of a new banner for the Rockets!
