The Medfield Warriors boys basketball team continued their warm-up for the regular season Saturday morning in a scrimmage at Sharon High School.
The Warriors are led by captains Rowan Tracey, Avo Armany and Peter Kumar. The two seniors - Tracey and Armany - contributed to their team’s success but it was Kumar’s offensive presence that was evident from the get-go. He scored eight points in the first period of play and finished leading all scorers throughout the six periods of play.
It was a back-and-forth matchup the whole way through as the Sharon Eagles were able to put points up with shots from all ranges. Primarily led by their front-court tandem, the Eagles outscored Medfield in four out of the six periods, leaving a lot for the Warriors to improve on, according to Medfield head coach Evan Moon.
“We’re a little bit smaller so we definitely need to rebound better,” said Moon. “That’s a key emphasis this year. Offensively, it’s getting the movements down that we want, the spacing that we want and the cuts that we want.”
The Warriors need for polishing was apparent on a failed attempt at an inbounds pass that forced Moon to burn a timeout in the third period. The Warriors recovered from the error by completing Moon’s drawn up inbounds pass following the timeout.
While offense was not up to Moon’s standards just yet, he expressed the effort his team put in on defense: “We’re playing aggressively,” said Moon. “We’re playing good defense positionally on the ball. If we can do that, we’ll be competitive.”
Medfield’s defensive prowess was most noticeable in the fifth scrimmage period as it held Sharon to zero points through the first five minutes of play. However, a collapse allowed the Eagles to go on an eight to three run and take the lead. Medfield regathered itself to finish out the period on top.
The Warriors cap off their preseason with a scrimmage versus Cardinal Spellman in preparation for their season opener at Medway High School this upcoming Friday.
