Students at St. Joseph Elementary School (SJES), located in Needham, MA, are giving back in support of children with cancer. This June, for the fifth year, a record number of more than thirty SJES girls, and a Monsignor Haddad Middle School student, will donate their hair to Pantene Beautiful Lengths to help girls and women with cancer receive wigs. The boys were also eager to do their part and several students raised their hand to ask how they could help support the cause. For the first year, more than thirty boys (and two dads) shaved their heads in the Mission One “Buzz Off” Event.
“'Serve each other and the world' is one of the guiding principles of our mission statement, and I couldn’t be more proud of the students and their compassion for others,” said Charlotte Kelly, principal of St. Joseph Elementary School. “Each year, more and more girls stand at my office door to sign up to donate their hair. After watching from the sidelines over the years, I was impressed when the boys asked what they could do! The St. Joe’s students are truly special.”
First up, the boys headed to Gillette Stadium on June 4 to shave their heads for kids with cancer. They had been fundraising for months, and raised more than $20,000.
A few days later, on June 8, the girls will do their part by donating their hair - 8 inches or more - to support Pantene Beautiful Lengths. Avante Salon in Needham has always been a huge supporter of their efforts and will, again, be cutting their hair at no cost.
