Needham Cub Scout Pack 23 held its annual pinewood derby event at St. Joseph Elementary School on Sunday. The pinewood derby is a racing event for Cub Scouts who, with the help of parents, create their own custom cars to race on a track. Scouts build their cars out of pine wood, plastic wheels and metal axles, then decorate them with paint, decals and other accessories. Fan favorites this year included cars designed to look like a shark, a tape measure, a pocket knife, and a car that carried a dinosaur. This year’s event also featured a “Sibling Race” so Cub Scout siblings could join in the fun. Prizes were given out for 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th place finishes by age category - Lion, Tiger, Wolf, Bear and Webelos dens - and the winner from each competed for first place over all. Additional prizes were awarded for cars that were most patriotic, most authentic, most colorful, most fun, most creative and most Scout-like.
