On August 10, the Needham Free Public Library (NFPL) paid tribute to the late Kate Wilner Fieldsteel by dedicating its local history and genealogy room in her memory. The library's second floor was filled with friends and family of Kate who gathered to commemorate her life and enduring legacy.
The local history and genealogy room houses an array of historical literature, including Needham High School yearbooks, antiquated phone directories, and volumes chronicling the town's history. Additionally, this room serves as the repository for the town's archives, encompassing town by-laws, architectural blueprints, and tax reports. These subjects held a special significance for Kate, as her family attests. Residing in the historic old minister's house, a prominent Needham landmark, Kate was profoundly passionate about genealogy and her potential familial connections.
Library staff spoke highly of the Fieldsteel family and their contributions to the library's growth. They shared the library's plans to utilize some of these contributions to support reading tutoring for those in need, as well as procuring VOX books—physical volumes equipped with integrated recordings—to facilitate reading skill development. The family of Kate expressed the importance of these initiatives, reflecting how Kate's own journey from a struggling reader to an avid one underscored the value of such programs.
The unveiling ceremony was succinct and poignant, followed by a gathering in the community room. Attendees mingled, exchanging anecdotes about Kate. Her profound impact on her family and friends was palpable, ensuring that her legacy will continue to thrive within the library's walls. The library, a cherished institution for numerous families, has become forever intertwined with the Fieldsteel family. The local history and genealogy room warmly welcomes library visitors, though it is recommended to check in with the reference desk upon arrival.
