Needham writer’s Vietnam story published

Thomas Keating of Needham, a veteran of Vietnam and a writer, will have a chapter from his Vietnam War memoir published in the fall edition of “War Stories,” an anthology series published by Oregon Humanities. The anthology will be released on November 11, Veterans Day.

Keating submitted the chapter, entitled “The Elephants (Con Voi),” about his unique experience in a small village in Vietnam during the war. It was first presented at the William Joiner Institute’s Master Writing Class at the University of Massachusetts, Boston in June.

Mr. Keating is a Vietnam War veteran of the US Army (1969-1970) and a Needham resident. After retiring in 2013, Tom began writing stories of his wartime experiences two years ago and joined the AGAPE veterans’ writing program at Boston College. He is active in the support of local veterans and currently is Chaplan at Needham’s Lt. Manson H. Carter Veterans of Foreign Wars Post.

Oregon Humanities is an independent, nonprofit affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities. It was the former Oregon Council for the Humanities, and is one of five statewide partners of the Oregon Cultural Trust. The program has received major support from the National Endowment for the Humanities' “Standing Together Initiative”, created to promote understanding of the military experience and to support returning veterans.
